FAQs

There are many myths surrounding the use of glass wool as an insulation material, but in order to make an informed decision you need to know the facts.

Is Pink® Batts® insulation bad for your health?

No, in 2001 19 scientific experts from 11 countries convened in France on behalf of IARC (a part of the world health organisation). Following a review of 15 years of research, they concluded that mineral wools including glass wool insulation should be considered “not classifiable as to carcinogenicity to humans”, the same category as tea, coffee and hair colouring.

Is the manufacture of Pink® Batts® insulation harmful to the environment?

Like all products made in factories, the manufacture of Pink® Batts® inevitably impacts on the natural environment. But Pink® Batts® products are made of up to 80% recycled glass in the North Island plant and up to 55% in the South Island plant.  We also recently received the "Big Tick" for our Pink® Batts® Ultra™ range from Environmental Choice New Zealand.  Manufacturing ingredients, production systems, energy saving policies, recycling programmes and waste disposal methods were the criteria taken into account.

Is Pink® Batts® insulation combustible?

No, in recent tests, Pink® Batts® insulation*, when tested by CSIRO Australia to AS1530 part 1, was confirmed as non-combustible (the same category as steel and concrete).
*Tests carried out on Pink® Batts® R1.8 and R2.6 ceiling insulation, and R2.8 wall insulation.

Is Pink® Batts® Insulation itchy to install?

Many people don’t find Pink® Batts® itchy, but for those who do there’s an easy solution. We recommend you wear a dust mask, gloves and long sleeved clothes during handling and installation. Even better, phone PinkFit® on 0800 PINKFIT (0800 746 534) – they’re our specialist installation service.

Are some people allergic to Pink® Batts® insulation?

No, while glass wool can cause a temporary irritation on contact, it is a mechanical irritation of the skin and not an allergic reaction.

How do I work out how many bales of Pink® Batts® insulation I need?

There are step-by-step instructions on the pack. Follow those and you’ll find installation a breeze. As a guide, it takes about 4 hours to install Pink® Batts® insulation in an average-sized ceiling. If you don’t want to do it yourself, phone PinkFit® on 0800 PINKFIT (0800 746 534).

Can I use Pink® Batts® wall insulation in the ceiling?

You can, but you may be making more work for yourself. The difference between wall and ceiling Pink® Batts® is their shape. Ceiling insulation is sized to fit between ceiling joists, while wall insulation is cut to fit between wall studs.

Will Pink® Batts® insulation dampen the noise created in my house?

Pink® Batts® insulation will help make your home a quieter place, but for specific noise control problems (teenager’s rooms, television rooms, street noise) you should specify Pink® Batts® Silencer® in the walls or Pink® Batts® Silencer® Mid Floor between floors.

Whats an R-value?

The R-value is the accepted measure of insulation performance. The higher the R-value the better the insulation properties.

What is Pink® Batts® Ultra™ insulation?

Pink® Batts® Ultra™ insulation is a premium range of specifically designed insulation products that deliver significantly higher insulation performance in their respective areas. The range consists of R4.0, R4.6 and R5.0 ceiling insulation, as well as R2.6 and R2.8 wall insulation.  Specify Pink® Batts® Ultra™ products with confidence for the best insulation performance in your home.
